EUSEM President Dr. Robert Leach recently spoke to Helen Quinn from Hospital Healthcare Europe about the critical crossroads facing emergency medicine in Europe, stressing that the current model is no longer sustainable and must rapidly evolve. He highlighted EUSEM’s priorities under his presidency, including harmonising emergency medicine training across all European nations, strengthening workforce support amid rising burnout, and embracing digital tools such as AI and telemedicine to enhance care. Dr. Leach also underscored European preparedness as EUSEM’s foremost focus, working with WHO, the EU and NATO to ensure emergency departments are equipped and coordinated to respond to future mass-casualty events, climate-driven crises and other emerging threats.
