EM Monthly: Abdominal Pain in the Emergency Department-When the Diagnosis Isn't Obvious

This case-based EM Monthly webinar explores the assessment of acute abdominal pain, the red flags that should never be overlooked, appropriate use of investigations and imaging, and the less common diagnoses hiding behind apparently unexplained abdominal pain.

It is aimed at emergency physicians, trainees, acute care doctors, nurses and other ED clinicians who want to improve their skills in managing abdominal pain.

After watching this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Apply a structured clinical approach to the assessment of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with undifferentiated or unexplained abdominal pain.
  • Identify red flags and clinical features associated with time-critical surgical, vascular, medical and metabolic causes of abdominal pain.
  • Recognise atypical presentations and important medical, neurological and uncommon mimics of an acute surgical abdomen.
  • Select and interpret appropriate laboratory investigations, diagnostic imaging and point-of-care ultrasound, and use clinical reassessment to manage diagnostic uncertainty.
  • Make safe, evidence-informed decisions regarding admission, referral, follow-up and discharge for patients with abdominal pain.

This programme, moderated by (TBC), containts the following presentations:

  • Acute Abdominal Pain: Red Flags, Pitfalls and the Diagnoses We Cannot Miss - Prof Tim Harris
