In memory of Dr. David Williams

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. David Williams. As one of the founders of EUSEM, he was a true leader and an innovative president in developing emergency medicine as a specialty.

He was the Clinical Director of the Emergency Department at St Thomas’ Hospital and was a consultant at three London teaching hospitals. Also, he was a fellow of five medical Royal Colleges. Dr. Williams held leading positions in the Casualty Surgeons Association, the British Association for Accident and Emergency Medicine, and the Faculty of Accident and Emergency Medicine. He was Chairman of the UEMS Multidisciplinary Joint Committee (MJC) on Emergency Medicine from 2006-2012 and was the first President of the new Section of Emergency Medicine of UEMS, the Union Europeenne des Medecins Specialistes.

As a primary Instigator of emergency medicine , Dr. David Williams  leaves a tremendous legacy for the next generation of emergency medicine specialists. An elegant and charismatic man, he will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts are with his family.

Important survey on child maltreatment toolkit in Emergency Departments in Europe

There is a need for improving recognition of child maltreatment in the emergency department (ED). Recently, a study performed by the Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital and Augeo Foundation in collaboration with the EUSEM, REPEM and EuSEN (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0246361) showed that only 25.6% (34/133) of the EDs in Europe follow most of the NICE guideline recommendations on child abuse & neglect.

As a follow-up, this survey aims to study barriers and facilitators for the implementation of a child maltreatment toolkit, consisting of a screening checklist, training and a strategy for adequate hospital policy, at EDs in Europe.

Can we do better? Do you want to help in the battle against child maltreatment?
